Hello everyone! I am thrilled to share that we just held our very first Young Women of Hong Kong gathering at the Women’s Lounge! It was a special occasion, particularly as it marked one of the last events in the lounge, creating lasting memories for our new founding members. We are grateful they could experience the powerful atmosphere there.

Arriving & Getting Settled

The lounge transformed into a cozy and inviting space, encouraging everyone to open up and feel at ease. As the room filled with attendees, we enjoyed food and drinks while getting to know one another. The warmth and friendliness created an environment where everyone felt welcome and unafraid to speak up. It was inspiring to see young women from diverse ethnic backgrounds and professions, showcasing how empowering women can be across various fields.

As we settled in, Sarah kicked off our gathering with a wonderful introduction, which she later passed on to me. I was excited to welcome everyone to our first Young WoHK gathering and express our appreciation for their presence. We started with icebreakers, where each participant shared their name, ethnicity, how they learned about Women of Hong Kong, and their favorite food. It was heartening to hear the diverse ways people found out about us, highlighting that no matter where you come from, there is always a place for you here.

Community

Hearing how we all came together was the perfect transition to the next segment, where I asked everyone around the table what community meant. This segment aimed to help us understand our goals as members of the Young Women of Hong Kong group. Everyone shared their unique meanings and perspectives, and I enjoyed hearing the variety of thoughts.

What stood out to me was a consensus that community encompassed not only “support” but also “connection,” “belonging,” and “collaboration.” Many expressed that community means having a safe space to share experiences, while others highlighted the importance of mentorship and encouragement.

Diving Deep

Next, we played a game where each participant received a piece of paper to write down a question, whether seeking advice on a challenge or asking something fun they wanted to know from others. The goal was to create a space for the young women to open up and engage in meaningful conversations about topics of interest. To ensure everyone felt comfortable, the game was kept anonymous. We had so many conversations about various topics, ranging from workplace conflicts, relationships, and even misunderstandings with parents.

I particularly enjoyed this game because it brought us closer together. The questions fostered relatable discussions, allowing us to share interesting stories that resonated with everyone.

Talking, chatting, and getting to know each other was a delightful experience. This group of women is bright and kind, truly reflecting the wonderful community we've built. It’s inspiring to see how like-minded we are in supporting one another and forming new friendships.

Despite the various reasons for being there—whether for work, a partner, school, or summer break—we all share a common goal. How wonderful it is to connect in this way!
