- Building Your Brand with Heart: Haley Herbst Shares Sassy's Media Secrets
There’s nothing quite like the energy of a Women of Hong Kong Community Call when we have a true industry expert in the (virtual) room, Sassy’s very own Managing Director, Haley Herbst. With over 30 members joining live, the questions came fast and the insights were even faster. If you missed it, don't worry - I've got you covered with all the key insights that got everyone typing "YES!" in the chat. Kicking off with a big one: "How do we grow an audience without a large budget?" I loved how Haley kept it real about this. She gets that not everyone has huge budgets, and that's okay. "What many people don't realize," Haley shared, "is that your most powerful tools are free. Your authentic social media presence and the genuine connections you build - that's your foundation." Her practical advice: Master your social media : Consistency and authenticity are key. This is how brands like Sassy actually discover new favorites. Build your champion squad : Networking is about finding people who genuinely believe in what you're building. Spend smart, not big : When you can invest, choose platforms you trust. "A little can go a long way if you allocate it wisely." On a struggle we all face: "How can we keep our content authentic vs. feeling like an ad?" Haley was refreshingly honest about this challenge that all media companies face. " The best partnerships happen when brands trust us to speak to our audience in our authentic voice. When we can say 'Hey, I tried this and here's what I really think' - that's when content truly resonates." The lesson? Look for collaborative partnerships where your brand's true personality can shine through. On creating engaging content: "How do we know what to post, especially if the content feels boring?" Haley's answer was reassuring: it's a process of trial and error. " You have to really understand your audience ," she said. " Meet them where they are. Consume what they consume. " It's about curating for your specific demographic, not just posting for the sake of it. On a feeling many of us have had: "I'm burnt out on social media and not seeing conversions in my health and wellness business." This one hit home. Haley had comforting news: for some industries, social media shouldn't be your main focus. "For health, wellness, or any trust-based business," Haley advised, "people are searching for authoritative content. They need to trust you, and that often happens through in-depth articles on established platforms, not just a social post." On a hot topic: "What's your take on using AI for creative content?" Haley's stance was optimistic but cautious. " AI is a fantastic tool for support, " she said, like drafting descriptions or brainstorming. "But for your core content—images, testimonials, your brand voice—authenticity is non-negotiable. We can spot AI, and so can your audience." On the value of traditional media: "Why isn't print media taken as seriously today?" Haley's response highlighted a significant truth: consumption habits have changed. " We have to meet our audience where they are ," she said, noting that attention spans are shorter and people consume information quickly on their phones. It's about adapting the depth of print to the pace of digital. On attracting attention: "As a small online business, how can I attract media and agencies to approach me?" "This is the hard part," Haley admitted. "But it comes down to having a killer brand identity." She noted that when you live and breathe your brand with passion and a clear story, that itself becomes the attraction. " Do the outreach, tell your story, and you'll find your place ." Ending with a brilliant question: "Beyond follower count, what metrics actually matter?" This was a mic-drop moment. Haley was certain: "Follower count means nothing, if you are not getting the engagement to reflect it." Instead, she said, focus on what shows real connection: Meaningful engagement: Are people commenting and sharing? Click-through rates : This shows genuine interest—are people taking action? Impressions : How many eyes are actually on your content? The Big Takeaway: Your Story is Your Strength What stood out to me most was how Haley kept coming back to one thing: authenticity . Whether you're just starting out or looking to scale, the most powerful tool you have is your genuine story and voice. As she reminded us, "The brands that succeed are the ones that stay true to who they are while meeting their audience where they are." What's Next for Your Brand? Feeling inspired? I know I am! - Are Instagram Trial Reels Worth It? Highlights from Women of Hong Kong's First Community Call
Ladies, last week we made history! Women of Hong Kong hosted its very first Community Call , creating a space online for inspiration, curiosity and a whole lot of learning - all within 45 minutes from the comfort your home, the gym or anywhere with your phone. Expert, Elisabetta Sorrentino, answering questions on all-things Instagram Reel related! Our first Community Call topic covered "Reels" and leading the charge with her unbeatable expertise was my brilliant business partner and COO, Elisabetta Sorrentino . Whether you’re a seasoned creator or someone trying to muster the courage to post your first reel (we see you!), this call was made for you. Here’s everything you need to know about what went down—and why these Community Calls are going to be a game-changer for women in Hong Kong. So, What Is a Community Call? For those who are new to the concept, a Community Call is a live, interactive session where women can come together to: Learn from Experts: Each session features a guest speaker or facilitator who shares their insights on a specific topic. Ask Questions & Collaborate: These calls are designed to be interactive, with opportunities to ask questions, share ideas, and spark conversations. Build Connections: It’s not just about learning—it’s about meeting like-minded women who understand the power of community. In short, a Community Call is where knowledge, connection and safety meet in a secured virtual room, twice a week for 45 minutes. :) The Recap: Your Questions, Answered Our members attending the first-ever Women of Hong Kong Community Call Here are the highlights from our call, featuring some of the top questions from the session and Elisabetta’s expert advice: Q1: Are Instagram trial reels worth it? Elisabetta: “Absolutely. Trial reels give you a chance to experiment with new ideas. Post them as trials, see how they perform, and if they’re a hit, make them visible to your full audience. It’s a low-risk, high-reward approach.” Q2: How can I turn non-followers into followers? Elisabetta: “Start with your bio—it’s your digital first impression. Make sure it clearly communicates who you are, what you do, and why people should follow you. And don’t forget to include a call-to-action in your captions, like ‘Follow for more tips.’” Q3: What’s the secret to creating great hooks for reels? Elisabetta: “The first 3 seconds are everything. Use dynamic visuals, bold text like ‘You’re doing this wrong,’ or an unexpected moment to grab attention. If you don’t hook them early, you’ll lose them.” Q4: Can I create engaging reels without showing my face? Elisabetta: “Absolutely! Faceless content is a great option. Use voiceovers, text-to-speech tools, or showcase your work instead of yourself. Authenticity matters more than anything.” Q5: Should I post reels in multiple languages? Elisabetta: “It depends on your audience. If your market is bilingual, mix it up. But if most of your audience speaks one language, prioritize that. Your Instagram analytics can guide you.” Q6: Do hashtags and tagging still matter for reels? Elisabetta: “Hashtags aren’t as powerful as they used to be, but 2–3 relevant ones can still help. Tagging collaborators or accounts with a bigger reach is much more effective.” The Takeaway: 5 Essential Instagram Reels Strategies for Women of Hong Kong Consistency Builds Momentum: Posting regularly signals Instagram to push your content to more viewers. Even one reel per week can make a difference. Optimize Your Profile: Your bio is your elevator pitch—make it count. Prioritize Quality: Use natural lighting, clear audio, and professional editing tools like CapCut to ensure polished results. Leverage Trends Wisely: Trending audios and themes can amplify reach when used creatively. Progress Over Perfection: Don’t let fear hold you back. Post your reel, learn from the results, and refine your approach. Our first Community Call was a beautiful reminder of what’s possible when we come together to support each other. Whether you joined to learn, ask questions, or simply soak up the inspiration, you were part of something special. And if there’s one thing you take away from Elisabetta’s advice, let it be this: Stop overthinking and just post it. See you at the next Community Call! - Future-Proof Your Child's Higher Education Pathway: Navigating the IGCSE & IB in Hong Kong
Choosing the right subjects for IGCSE and the IB Diploma can feel like a high-stakes puzzle. With university prerequisites, scoring systems, and personal passions to balance, where do you even begin? In our latest community call, Abigael Tan , a HKETs tutor since 2013, shared her expert advice on planning this critical academic journey. The session was packed with actionable insights to help your child on this pathway to university - we’ve distilled the key takeaways for you right here. Start with the End in Mind: Subject Selection Strategy The most powerful piece of advice was to plan backwards. Before selecting subjects, research the specific requirements for your child’s intended university course or career path. If they’re unsure, Abigael advised students to pick options that were generally more broad and aligned to their interests. Here are a couple of subject streams your child may be considering: Science & Medicin e: For medicine or biomedical fields, Biology and Chemistry are essential. If you're science-focused, Chemistry at Higher Level (HL) is highly recommended. At IGCSE, aim for triple-award or double-award sciences for a stronger foundation. Engineering : Prioritise Chemistry and Physics, with Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) being the preferred choice for most engineering programmes. Business & Finance : Economics is often preferred over Business Management as it provides a broader, more analytical foundation, keeping more doors open. It will be the business subject that allows your child do go down almost any business pathway, and would make an easier transition if your child chooses to switch subjects into Business Management rather than the other way around. Arts & Humanities : For language and linguistics, it's very likely a Language HL is required. For many other art courses, a strong art portfolio will be the most distinguishing factor to produce. Demystifying the IB Diploma Structure The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a comprehensive two-year pre-university curriculum. Abigael broke down the IB Diploma into its fundamental components: The Core is what sets the IB apart. Students typically take a combination of three Higher Level (HL) and three Standard Level (SL) subjects, but also need to complete the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) requirements. The EE is a 4,000-word independent research essay, typically undertaken in one of your HL subjects. The maximum score is 45 points (42 from six subjects, plus up to 3 from the core). While a score of 24 points can secure the diploma, competitive universities require significantly higher results. Timings, Predictions, and What Happens If Things Go Wrong There can be so much uncertainty during this time. Abigael gave some insight on how to help students manage a number of variables: Changing Subjects : There is a window to change your IB subject choices at the start of the programme, usually until mid-October. Late switches can be complicated, so careful initial selection is key or choose subjects that are broad and apply to multiple streams. Predicted Grades Matter : Especially for US university applications, your teacher-predicted grades are crucial. These are based on your performance in mock exams, summative assessments, and coursework. AI & Academic Integrity : While tempting, over-reliance on AI can severely impact exam readiness. Schools are actively using AI-detection software and tracking tools like Google Doc history to identify plagiarism. Use AI as a learning aid, not a substitute for your own work. Practice independent problem-solving, and always ensure you understand and can articulate the concepts yourself. The "What If I Fail" Scenario : Failing a few IGCSEs doesn’t necessarily halt your progress, as schools often allow progression with remedial support. Failing the full IB Diploma may allow for a re-sit, but often requires repeating the two-year programme. A Long-Term Partnership between Students, Parents & Schools In summary, our discussion highlighted that success in the IGCSE and IB programmes is not a last-minute effort but a continuous journey. It hinges on a proactive and structured approach that begins long before the final exams. A key takeaway is the importance of a strong, three-way partnership between students, parents, and schools and tutors . This means parents need to work together with their children, listen to their needs, and foster an environment where students feel supported, not pressured. By focusing on well-being, open communication, and consistent effort, we can guide our children through these demanding programmes, ensuring they feel empowered and confident throughout their academic journey. A huge thank you to Abigael for sharing her expertise with parents and making the IGCSE and IB journey less confusing. If you’re still feeling overwhelmed by subject choices, university prerequisites, or how the IB core really works, you can reach out to Abigael via her Instagram .
- Untangling the Knot: Your Guide to Family and Matrimonial Law in Hong Kong
Let’s be honest, talking about prenups, divorce, and wills isn’t as fun as planning a wedding or a family vacation. But, just like remembering to pack an umbrella during typhoon season, a little legal preparedness can save you from getting absolutely drenched. Understanding the complexities of family and matrimonial law is critical for protecting your interests and those of your loved ones. A recent community call with Jaerey Velasco , Partner at Payne Velasco leading the family and matrimonial litigation team, shed light on these often challenging matters within the Hong Kong legal context. For anyone facing these difficult circumstances, knowledge is the first step toward resolution. Here are the essential takeaways from our discussion: The Value of Prenuptial and Postnuptial Agreements While both prenuptial and postnuptial agreements are recognised in Hong Kong, they are not automatically binding. For an agreement to carry significant weight, it must meet stringent criteria: full financial disclosure from both parties, independent legal advice for each individual , and execution well in advance — prenups should be signed at least 28 days before marriage to avoid claims of duress. Postnuptial agreements are just as valid as prenups and are drafted after a couple has been married, outlining the division of assets, debts, and financial responsibilities in the event of separation or divorce. When properly drafted, these documents serve as a powerful guide for courts making decisions on asset division. The Critical Importance of a Will and Intestacy Rules The rules of intestacy — what happens when one passes without a will — are a powerful reminder of the necessity of estate planning. In Hong Kong, if someone with a spouse and children die s without a valid will, the first HK$500,000 of their estate passes to the spouse. The remainder is then divided according to a statutory formula between the spouse and children. However, this process can often be long and cause divisions within unified families. A validly executed will is the only way to ensure your specific wishes are followed and to provide clarity and security for your family. Understanding Separation and Maintenance The law acknowledges the practical realities of separation. Parties can be considered separated while living under the same roof, provided they lead truly independent lives within the residence . Regarding financial support, maintenance for a spouse and children is not a punitive measure but is calculated based on reasonable needs, earning capacity, and the standard of living established during the marriage. The starting point for asset division is an equal split, but this is adjusted based on the specific circumstances of the case. Establishing Jurisdiction in Cross-Border Cases Hong Kong courts require a substantial connection to the region —such as residency, domicile, or significant assets located here—to hear a divorce case. This is a crucial first step, especially when another jurisdiction may also have a claim. The courts will carefully weigh these factors in "forum disputes" to determine the most appropriate venue for proceedings. Help is Out There The discussion underscored several options to seek help for those in difficult situations: Professional Help : The discussion highlighted the importance of shopping around for legal representation that is compatible with you and your needs - you must be able to trust them to handle deeply personal and emotionally charged matters with both empathy and professional discretion. Legal Aid Department: For those unable to afford private representation, applying for legal aid is an essential first step to secure legal representation for your divorce proceedings in Hong Kong. Social Welfare Department : In the event that there is a dispute on children care arrangements, the Social Welfare Department will be involved in preparing a report with its recommendation for the children care arrangements, and in cases involving the potential removal of children from Hong Kong. Conclusion Family legal matters, from divorce to probate, are inherently complex and emotionally charged. The Hong Kong legal system provides a structured framework for resolution, but navigating it requires expert guidance. Whether you are considering a pre- or post-nuptial agreement, facing a separation, or planning your estate, consulting with a qualified legal professional is the most important step you can take to protect your future. - So You Want to Be Your Own Boss? Your HK Business Setup Cheat Sheet Is Here!
Ever had a brilliant business idea over a cup of coffee, only to be stopped cold by the thought of actually setting it up? The forms, the fees, the fear of getting it wrong… we’ve all been there at some point. Today, we cut through the confusion with an informative Q&A session led by Vivian Chow , CPA and business consultant specialising in setting up and running your own business in Hong Kong. She broke down the nitty-gritty of company formation, compliance, and tax tricks into bite-sized, actionable advice to empower community members hoping to take that first business step. Whether you're dreaming of launching the next big e-commerce brand or formalising your freelance hustle, here is a quick breakdown of everything you need to know. The Big Question: To Incorporate or Not to Incorporate? This is the first crossroads for any new business owner. Vivian laid out the two main paths: Sole Proprietorship - the simpler, faster, and cheaper option : This route is perfect for freelancers and solo operators. But, be warned, this option offers zero liability protection. If your business hits a rough patch, your personal assets (yes, that includes your savings and apartment!) are on the line. Limited Company - the gold standard for businesses : This path comes with higher setup and maintenance costs, but it creates a legal shield between your company and your personal life. Your liability is limited to your investment in the company, and, as Vivian emphasised, this protection is often worth every penny. The Verdict: If you're testing the waters, a sole proprietorship might be your starting line, but if you're building a vessel meant for bigger seas, a limited company setup is the way to go. Pro Tips from the Expert Vivian gave us some golden nuggets of wisdom to ensure our businesses not only start strong but stay strong: Your Company Secretary is Your Best Friend . They aren’t just a legal requirement; they’re your guide through annual filings and compliance. A good secretary will help you prepare the necessary board resolutions, ensuring you stay compliant without the legal guesswork. For single-director companies, you can even draft your own board resolutions and have your secretary review them—a great way to stay hands-on and save costs. Ownership Changes? Transferring company ownership is typically done via a share transfer . It requires proper documentation but can be done at a value you and the buyer agree on. Offshore Claims Are Getting Harder. The rules have tightened. It's now much more difficult to claim that your income is sourced outside HK and is tax-exempt. Always get professional advice on this. Stay on Top of Your Mail ! Ignoring letters from the bank or the government is a one-way ticket to penalties, fines, or even frozen accounts. Respond promptly! Myth-Busting: The Rules They Don't Tell You We love a good myth-buster, and on top of her pro tips, Vivian also delivered some helpful advice to break through the noise once and for all. "I run my business from my laptop, so I don't need a business address." ❌ FALSE. Even if you're a digital nomad running a global empire from a coffee shop, you must have a local Hong Kong business address for registration. "I'm just freelancing; I don't need to register." ❌ Think again! Registering your business isn't just a legal hoop to jump through; it's your ticket to maximising tax deductions. You can only claim legitimate business expenses (think marketing, software, equipment) if you're officially registered. Don't leave money on the table! "I'll just pay my teenager to help out; it's a tax write-off." ❌ Not so fast. For sole proprietors, salaries paid to family members are not considered deductible expenses. Keep it professional! Your Quick-Start Action Plan Feeling informed and ready to get started? Here’s a simple three-step guide for getting it done: Define the details of your business . You’ll need: - A company name; - Shareholders & Directors (Minimum 1 person for each role, though this person can be you); - A Company Secretary (a mandatory role to ensure you stay compliant; this person has to someone other than yourself); - The Capital Structure; and, of course, - That all-important local business address. Decide if you’re going to apply digitally or not: - The Digital Route : Company incorporation can be as quick as 24 hours after submitting your online application. Yes, you read that right! - The Paper Trail : Using paper forms? Expect a process of 6-8 working days. Receive your Certificate of Registration You've Got This! Remember, every big corporation started with a single step. The journey from idea to incorporation is less daunting when you have a roadmap and a community to support you. A huge thank you to Vivian Chow for her invaluable time and wisdom. Ready to set up your business in Hong Kong or have more questions? - Cracking the Code: Using AI to Win at Google Ads
Ever feel like you're shouting into the void with your Google Ads? You set a budget, write what you think are Pulitzer-winning ad copies, and then… crickets. You’re not alone. The digital marketing world is changing at light-speed, and the new pilot in the cockpit is Artificial Intelligence. In our latest WoHK Community Call, we sat down with the brilliant Anne Suaverdez , founder of Wresonate Media, to demystify how we can harness AI for Google Ads without it blowing up our marketing budgets. The discussion was practical, the advice was gold, and the message was clear: AI is your incredibly powerful intern, not your replacement. Key Takeaways from Our AI for Google Ads Deep Dive 1. The 80/20 Rule of AI: Be the Boss, Not the Bystander The biggest theme of the call? Balance. While AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini are phenomenal for brainstorming keywords, generating ad copy ideas, and even creating images, they shouldn’t be left unsupervised. Manual Control for Maximum Impact : Anne emphasised that for lead generation and smaller budgets, keeping manual control over your bidding strategies and ad assets is often smarter. Letting AI run wild on a Performance Max campaign might boost your "Optimisation Score," but it could also spend your budget in ways that don't align with your actual goals. Your New Magic Number is 80% : Speaking of that Optimisation Score—turns out, you can stop stressing about hitting 100%. An 80%+ score is perfectly healthy. Chasing that last 20% often means handing over more control to Google’s AI than might be beneficial for your specific campaign. 2. The Art of the Prompt: It’s Not Magic, It’s a Framework Asking AI, "Write me a Google Ad," is like asking a genie for "more money." You might get it, but probably not in the way you wanted. Don’t just use a template, use this helpful framework for crafting prompts. Provide your AI with: The Problem: "My click-through rate for my yoga studio ads is low." The Objective: "I need to attract more high-intent clients looking for beginner classes." The Desired Output: "Generate 5 ad headlines that are calming, action-oriented, and include the keyword 'beginner yoga.'" This structure gives the AI context and direction, leading to dramatically better and more usable results. 3. Surprising Insights & Myth Busting Anne shared some gems that flipped conventional wisdom on its head: Text Over Pixels : For search campaigns, your headlines and business name are far more influential in driving clicks than your images. So, obsess over your copy first! (Visuals are still king for discovery and display ads, though). AI Images are Allowed (But Use Taste) : Google Ads does not penalise AI-generated images (from tools like Canva or DALL-E). However, they often lack the brand nuance and cultural sensitivity a human eye can catch. Use them for inspiration and concepts, but maybe not for your final, customer-facing asset. Patience is a Virtue : The algorithm needs time to learn! Let your campaigns run for at least 14 days before making major changes. After any tweak, give it another 7-14 days to settle. Good data beats knee-jerk reactions every time. 4. Your Action Plan: What to Do Next Inspired? Here’s your homework, straight from the call: Start Small: Test with a small daily budget (think HKD 50-100) to learn without fear. Play with Prompts: Use the framework above and experiment with ChatGPT or Gemini. Ask it to analyze your service pages or brainstorm long-tail keywords. Be a Curious Human: Use free resources like Unsplash and Pexels for imagery, and always, always review AI-generated content with your brand’s unique voice and goals in mind. The Bottom Line AI isn't here to steal your job nor is it something to be afraid of; it is here to handle the tedious stuff and unlock your capacity to focus on the things that matter. It’s a force multiplier for research, optimisation, and idea generation; but the strategy, the brand heart, and the final decision-making? That’s all you. A huge thank you to Anne for sharing her expertise and making AI for Google Ads seem less daunting. Have a burning Google Ads question we didn’t cover? The conversation continues! - Let's Talk About Your Fridge Leftovers: Carla's Take on Food Waste
In today’s community call, we (dumpster)-dived into the topic of food waste in Hong Kong. Founder of Hong Kong award-winning food saving app CHOMP , Carla Martinesi , answered questions from our community with topics ranging from the leading contributors to food waste in the supply chain to the psychology of food waste and tips on how to be more sustainable - all whilst demonstrating how to utilise an overripe banana and turn it into some scrumptious cookies (keep reading for the recipe). For anyone looking to transform their kitchen habits, here’s a recap of the key takeaways that are already changing how our members shop, cook, and consume. The Food Waste Problem in Hong Kong Did you know that Hong Kong ranks significantly high as a food-waste-generating city per capita? 3,600 tons of food is thrown away daily, which is the equivalent of 27 double decker buses 40% of landfills are filled with food 13 million bowls of rice are thrown away daily So what can you do in your everyday life to reduce your personal impact? Many think reducing waste is just about eating leftovers. Our discussion clarified that it’s a much more robust system that can also help you set your weekly routine up and be more intentional when consuming food. Here are some practical strategies Carla mentioned that could help reduce your impact as well as some sustainable resources to look into: Your Kitchen Habits Are Your Foundation The number one tip was to consciously build a routine before the waste happens. Be specific in your prep: dedicate time to meal plan, and cook grains and sauces in batches. This isn’t about being a “superchef”; it’s about giving your future, tired self the gift of a ready meal, reducing the urge to order in. Do a fridge audit and see what’s hiding in the back before it’s too late, organising to optimise for less wastage. For example, have a pen near the fridge to label food production dates and re-order the fridge with condiment expiry left-to-right rather than front-to-back. Conscious Sourcing - Shopping in Bulk or at Farmers Markets! This is about your kitchen’s connection to the wider world. It’s built by creating "votes of confidence" for better systems, like shopping at local farmers markets (e.g. Pier 3 ) or buying in bulk to reduce your plastic use (e.g. Slowood , Live zero , Spicebox organics ). Reclaiming Your Scraps with Creativity It is possible to see potential where we once saw waste. This involves learning the art of preservation—pickling, canning (with safe hygiene and disinfecting habits!), and composting, whether with a sleek Lomi food recycler or a trip to the Hong Kong government’s public purple composting bins located in Wan Chai Yau Tsim Mong. Also, leverage your freezer like a pro; it’s not just for frozen peas! You can freeze batch-cooked sauces, bread, leftovers, and even leftover herbs in olive oil to instantly boost your future meals and make "what’s for dinner?" a much easier question to answer. Reframing the Psychology of Food Waste Some of us might have grown up with our parents reminding us “Don’t waste food, there are starving children in Africa” or “You will have an ugly husband if you don’t finish all your rice.” This, while well intentioned, may have led to unhealthy eating habits and disorders. As the next generation of adults, we are all hoping to find the balance between breaking the negative narrative of food waste guilt with being conscious of our food consumption habits. Awareness is a great first step as is having positive conversations about the benefits of reducing food waste and setting systems in place to pack away leftovers and repurpose for future meals. The Gift of Systemic Awareness and Education This journey is about more than our kitchens; it's about rediscovering our role in a larger chain. We can choose to support charities like Impact HK and More Good , both of whom repurpose food meant for landfill and re-distribute to the homeless, and businesses that prioritise sustainability and give back to our community. When we build a culture of food waste reduction, it makes forming habits much easier. Make sure you’re having conscious conversations with friends, colleagues and your children to break bad habits and advocate for change through education programs in our schools and lobbying the government, recognising that a vast amount of waste happens long before food reaches us, due to transportation losses and aesthetic standards that reject a crooked banana. A huge thank you to Carla! In summary, while food waste is a systemic problem, these small food waste hacks help make us more conscientious consumers and better caretakers of our planet. If you are looking to support Carla, give her a follow on Instagram to watch more tips on reducing your food waste and check out the CHOMP Instagram and website for more food-saving hacks and recipes. - Beyond Distraction: Unpacking the Complex Link Between ADHD and Intimacy
During today's Community Call, we turned our attention to a subject often relegated to private therapists' offices or hushed conversations: the profound impact of ADHD on intimacy and relationships. The session, facilitated by Mary Foxworth , founder of the Foxworth Institute and an advocate for neurodivergent experiences, served as a groundbreaking forum. It moved beyond stereotypes of hyperactivity and distraction, delving into the real-world complexities ADHD introduces into romantic partnerships, friendships, and self-perception. For the dozens of women in attendance, the call was a rare opportunity to normalize a deeply personal struggle, reframing it not as a personal failing, but as a neurological difference requiring understanding and strategy. The Unseen Load: Navigating Disorganization in Partnerships The conversation opened with a question that resonated with many: how can a partner support someone with ADHD without shouldering the entire mental load and breeding resentment? Foxworth identified disorganization as a common trait across all ADHD subtypes. The solution, she argued, begins with a crucial reframe. “It’s really important to separate a perceived character flaw from an actual ADHD symptom,” she explained . Recognizing forgetfulness not as incompetence or indifference, but as a symptom of a dopamine-deficient brain, is the first step toward empathy. From there, practical strategies are key. She recommended implementing shared digital calendars with clear reminders and defined responsibilities. This creates external structure for a brain that struggles to create it internally, moving the dynamic away from nagging and toward collaborative management. The line between support and enabling “weaponized incompetence” was acknowledged as a real concern. The consensus was that open, honest communication— expressing one’s needs without blame —is essential for finding a balance that preserves the relationship and the well-being of both partners. The Intimacy Equation: Novelty, Focus, and the ADHD Brain Perhaps the most revelatory part of the discussion centered on sexual intimacy. Foxworth detailed how the ADHD brain’s constant quest for dopamine and novelty directly conflicts with the routine that long-term relationships can fall into. “For an ADHD brain, a typical scenario of sex might be lights off, lying down, quiet… [but] that significantly impacts the brain's ability to trigger arousal,” she stated. The result can be a lack of interest that a partner may misread as a loss of attraction. The strategy? Intentional novelty. This doesn’t necessarily mean drastic measures, but rather introducing elements of sensory stimulation to help the brain stay engaged—playing music, introducing toys, changing positions, or altering the environment. The goal is to make intimacy a “creative project” for both partners, transforming a potential point of conflict into an opportunity for exploration and connection. This open dialogue about sexual needs, often stigmatized for women, was highlighted as a critical tool for healthy relationships. A Growing Awareness: Diagnosis and Support in Hong Kong The discussion also tackled practical hurdles, specifically the barrier of cost for those seeking a formal diagnosis in Hong Kong. Foxworth shared her personal experience, noting that while comprehensive evaluations can run high, more accessible options exist, such as initial consultations with specialists like Dr. Jennifer Chan at Central Health. She also highlighted a crucial piece of information for professionals in the city: an ADHD diagnosis is protected under Hong Kong ordinance, meaning employees cannot be fired for related performance issues. This legal protection empowers individuals to seek diagnoses and request workplace accommodations. Beyond the romantic sphere, the call emphasized the importance of supportive friendships. The advice was universal: lead with love and empathy. “Being able to separate a perceived character flaw from an ADHD presentation is the most important thing,” Foxworth noted. A simple, caring check-in— “I’ve noticed this, I care about you, how can I support you?” —can be far more effective than frustration. A Movement Toward Understanding This community call did more than share tips; it contributed to a larger, vital movement to destigmatize neurodiversity. It gave a voice to women who have often felt misunderstood—in their partnerships, their friendships, and their own minds—and provided a framework for compassion and practical action. By bringing this conversation into the light, the Women of Hong Kong community reaffirmed its role as a space not just for networking, but for collective learning and profound support, proving that the most intimate challenges are easier faced together. - Unlocking SEO: Your Website's Key to Visibility in the Age of AI
There’s a phrase that echoes through the digital marketing world every couple of years: "SEO is dead." But if you were in our vibrant community call this week, you’d know nothing could be further from the truth. This week, we were thrilled to host Velizara Tellalyan (Zara) , a certified SEO consultant and Google Ads expert with over 13 years of experience, for a deep dive into SEO for Beginners . With over 20 members in attendance, the energy was electric, filled with fantastic questions and insightful answers. For those who couldn't make it or for anyone who wants a refresher, here’s a recap of the key takeaways that are already changing how our members think about their online presence. SEO is Very Much Alive (And Evolving) Zara kicked off the call by addressing the elephant in the room: the rise of AI chatbots like ChatGPT. Is SEO still worth the investment? The resounding answer was yes . "SEO is the visibility of your website," Zara explained. "Your organic visibility, which you capitalize on over time without investing every month in advertising, is your SEO." While AI is a powerful new tool, studies show it still only holds a small fraction of the global search market compared to Google's billions of daily searches. The key insight? AI and LLMs (Large Language Models) are trained on website content. This means that having a strong, well-optimized website is now more important than ever to be visible across all platforms, including in AI-generated responses. "SEO will only become irrelevant when we stop using websites," Zara noted. And that future is nowhere in sight. The Three Pillars of a Strong SEO Strategy Many think SEO is just about keywords. Zara clarified that it’s a much more robust field built on three core pillars: Technical SEO: This is the foundation. It’s all about making sure search engine bots can easily crawl and understand your website. This includes site speed, mobile-friendliness, site architecture, and internal linking (like your menus and footers!). On-Page SEO: This is the content you control on your pages. It encompasses your target keywords, high-quality content, meta titles, and descriptions. Off-Page SEO: This is about your website’s reputation across the internet, primarily built through backlinks . When a reputable site links to yours, it’s seen as a "vote of confidence" by Google, significantly boosting your authority. Your First Step: Don't Guess, Do Keyword Research For any business owner feeling overwhelmed, Zara had one clear piece of advice: start with keyword research. This is the absolute first step in any SEO strategy. It’s not about guessing what your customers might search for; it’s about using data to understand what they actually type into Google. Keyword research helps you: Discover the exact phrases your potential clients use. Gauge the monthly search volume for those terms. Understand the competition ("keyword difficulty") so you can target realistic, high-impact keywords first. This research informs everything else—from the pages you create on your site to the content you write and the links you build. The Tools of the Trade You can’t do SEO in the dark. Zara recommended starting with a robust tool suite like SEMrush or Ahrefs , which offer a full range of features from keyword research to site audits. For those targeting the Chinese market, she highlighted Dragon Metrics for Baidu SEO. And for our members, she offered a pro-tip: Leverage the Women of Hong Kong Business Directory! Listing your business creates a valuable "backlink" from our authoritative site to yours, giving your SEO a helpful boost. A Huge Thank You to Zara! We are so grateful to Zara for demystifying SEO and for her generous, expert advice. The conversation was so rich we only scratched the surface! - A Candid Conversation with Coco Chan on Life After Divorce
In our latest, we held space for a conversation often spoken about in whispers, one wrapped in societal shame and personal guilt: navigating life after divorce. Guided by the beautiful resilience and wisdom of Coco Alexandra , an entrepreneur, intuitive healer, and a proud single mama, we ventured into the heart of a topic that touches so many. The virtual room was filled with courage, empathy, and a shared understanding that this is a path no one should walk alone. To protect the space we shared, we are only sharing the key themes and universal questions that arose, while honouring our promise of complete confidentiality for our members and attendees. The Unspoken Questions We Explored The call revealed that whether considering divorce, in the midst of it, or years on the other side, the questions we carry are deeply human and often universal. 1. How can I best support a friend who is considering or going through a divorce? This was a primary concern for many. The answer, offered with great wisdom, was to shift from advisor to listener. The most powerful question you can ask a friend is: “Do you need me to listen right now, or would you like my advice?” This question empowers them to define their needs in the moment. Unsolicited advice, even with the best intentions, can often feel overwhelming. The best support is a non-judgmental ear and a heart that holds space without needing to fix anything. 2. How does someone rebuild trust after infidelity? This painful question was met with raw honesty. The journey to rebuilding trust is deeply personal and must be a conscious choice made by both partners. From the outside, friends and family can only offer a “sacred mirror,” helping their loved one ask the hard questions they might be avoiding. Ultimately, the decision to stay and rebuild or to leave and heal is a path each individual must choose for themselves, often requiring professional guidance to navigate the complex emotions and broken foundations. 3. Is it possible to convince someone that divorce is the right choice? This thought came from a place of deep care, watching a loved one remain in a long-term unhappy situation. The difficult truth is that you cannot convince someone to make a change they are not ready for. Everyone is on their own timeline. The most loving thing you can do is to gently offer your perspective when asked, but to release the need to control the outcome. As one voice on the call shared, “You can tell someone what they should do a million times, but they won’t do it until they see it for themselves.” Powerful Insights from the Other Side Coco generously shared her personal journey—from leaving a 12-year marriage to rebuilding a joyful life with her daughter—offering practical strategies. Your Support System is Your Foundation: The number one tip was to consciously build your inner circle before you need it. Be specific in asking for help, whether it’s childcare, a home-cooked meal, or simply a safe place to cry. You don’t have to be a “superwoman”; it’s okay to not be okay. Co-Parenting with Grace: It is possible to create a new, healthy dynamic for your children. This involves setting clear boundaries (Coco even created her own “Co-Parenting 10 Commandments”), never speaking negatively about the other parent in front of the children, and reassuring them that while the family structure has changed, they are loved as much as ever. The Gift of Emotional Honesty for Children: Instead of hiding sadness or anger, we can model emotional resilience for our children. It’s okay to cry with them and say, “I’m sad too.” Teaching them tools like yelling into a pillow or shaking out their energy helps them process their big feelings in a healthy way, building their emotional intelligence. Reclaiming Your Identity: Life after divorce is about rediscovery. It’s a chance to reconnect with what you like, what you want to do, and who you are outside of a partnership. As Coco radiantly proclaimed, it can be the best decision you ever make, leading to a profound sense of self and authentic happiness that radiates to your children. You Are Not Alone This call was a powerful reminder that behind the statistics and the stigma, there are real stories of pain, resilience, and incredible strength. If you are on this path, know that your feelings are valid, your journey is your own, and there is a community here to support you without judgment. A heartfelt thank you to every woman who shared, listened, and held space. Your courage fuels this community. If you are looking for support on your own journey, you can connect with Coco Alexandra on Instagram for guidance, healing work, and mentorship. *At Women of Hong Kong, we are committed to creating a safe, confidential, and empowering space for women to connect over life’s most challenging and important topics. - Overthinking, Breakups, and Yelling at Your Kids (Let’s Talk About It)
Our second Women of Hong Kong Community Call was a heartfelt and insightful session, leaving many of us feeling seen, heard, and equipped. With guest expert Dr. Katrina Rozga , we explored topics like managing overthinking, dealing with parenting challenges, and navigating the complexities of relationships. Remind me, What Is a Community Call? If you’re new here, let me explain. A Community Call is a live, interactive session where women can: Learn from Experts: Each session features a guest speaker or facilitator who shares their insights on a specific topic. :) Highlights from the Second Community Call The second Women of Hong Kong Community Call was a masterclass in connection, self-awareness, and practical advice. Expert, Dr Katrina Rozga, answering questions on all-things Psychology! Taming Overthinking with 'Worry Time' One of the most talked-about topics was Dr. Katrina’s technique for managing intrusive thoughts: “Worry Time.” The idea is simple. Choose a set time each day— say 6 PM —to allow yourself to worry or overthink. Throughout the day, when intrusive thoughts arise, write them down and remind yourself, “It’s not worry time yet.” When your designated time arrives, sit down and reflect on those thoughts. Often, you’ll find that some worries no longer feel relevant or urgent, and you’ll approach others with a clearer, calmer mindset. Dr. Katrina also addressed a follow-up question: What if I fall into a loop during worry time? She explained that by setting boundaries around worrying, you create a mental shift. Instead of feeling consumed by your thoughts, you approach them actively and with a problem-solving attitude. This strategy not only helps you regain control but also reduces the emotional weight of overthinking. Breaking Generational Cycles in Parenting Parenting was another major theme of the session, and Dr. Katrina offered powerful advice on breaking unhealthy generational habits, such as yelling. Her first reminder: No parent is perfect. Yelling happens, but what matters is what you do afterward. Take the time to repair the relationship by apologizing to your child and explaining your feelings. For example, you might say, “I’m sorry I shouted. I got frustrated when you didn’t listen, but I shouldn’t have raised my voice. I’m working on this, and I hope we can try again.” Dr. Katrina emphasized that this not only helps rebuild trust but also teaches accountability and empathy. If you feel overwhelmed in the moment, step away. Let your child know that you’re taking a break to calm down—not because of their behavior, but because you want to respond thoughtfully. Introducing this practice to your children also models emotional regulation, giving them tools they can use in their own lives. She shared a simple but impactful mental exercise: Ask yourself, “Are they being bad, or is this just annoying me?” This perspective shift can help you react with more patience and compassion. Mindfulness Practices for Parents and Kids Mindfulness doesn’t have to be complicated. Dr. Katrina shared sensory-based techniques that make mindfulness fun and accessible for families. One example is mindful eating. During meals, encourage your family to slow down and savor one bite of food at a time, noticing its taste and texture. Another is mindful observation. Turn a walk into a game by asking everyone to point out what they see, hear, or feel. This not only grounds you in the present but also helps children develop an appreciation for their surroundings. Finally, there’s the “5 Senses Game” —a quick and effective grounding technique. Ask your child to name five things they can see, four they can touch, three they can hear, two they can smell, and one they can taste. These exercises are simple yet powerful tools to reduce stress and foster presence. Our members attending the second Women of Hong Kong Community Call Addressing Concerning Behaviors in Children Dr. Katrina also tackled questions about modern behavioral challenges in children, including screen addiction, bullying, and harmful language. One participant shared her concern about her child casually using phrases like “go kill yourself” during gaming. Dr. Katrina acknowledged that this language has unfortunately become normalized in some peer groups, but it’s essential to address it. She recommended having an open conversation about the impact of words, even when used jokingly. Explain to your child that while they may not mean harm, others might take their words to heart. Sharing real-life stories about the consequences of harmful language can also help them understand the weight of their words. Navigating the End of Relationships The session also provided support for those facing personal transitions, including the end of long-term relationships. Dr. Katrina reminded participants that breakups aren’t just about losing a partner—they often involve grieving the loss of a confidant, teammate, and shared history. This layered grief can feel overwhelming, but it’s important to allow yourself to feel it fully. For those struggling with unexpected waves of sadness or heaviness, she explained that unresolved emotions often resurface when they’re suppressed. Processing these feelings—whether through journaling, talking to a friend, or even speaking your thoughts out loud—can help you work through them more effectively. She also emphasized the importance of patience. Healing is not linear, and there’s no timeline for moving on. Healing doesn’t follow a timeline, and that’s okay . What struck me most about this session was the vulnerability and honesty in the room. From parenting struggles to personal heartbreaks, women opened up about their experiences, and in return, they received support, validation, and practical advice. As Dr. Katrina said: “When we talk about these things out loud, it reminds us that we’re not alone. Community is so important because we’re all going through the same things.” See you at the next Community Call! - How Jessica Berman Turned a Family Recipe into Hong Kong’s Favorite Soda
In the vibrant city of Hong Kong, where the beverage market is often flooded with sugary drinks and artificial flavors, Jessica Berman saw an opportunity . With no prior experience in the food and beverage industry, Jessica set out to create something different—a soda that was not just refreshing but also healthier, rooted in real ingredients and family values. Enter Neon Tiger : a brand inspired by her mother’s homemade sodas , promising full flavor with none of the artificial gimmicks. You might have already tasted Neon Tiger at one of our various events, where Jessica has become a familiar face. She is always ready to provide a refreshing drink for many to enjoy as we network and gain new experiences within our community. We truly admire her quality and commitment, which have not only made her a staple at our gatherings but also a beloved entrepreneur in Hong Kong. To get to know Jessica a bit more, we ask her a few questions to really understand her perspective and how her journey began! CEO of Neon Tiger Jessica Berman The Spark of Inspiration Jessica’s journey with Neon Tiger was born out of a personal need. As a mother, she struggled to find a drink she felt comfortable giving her kids. Most options were either packed with sugar or sweetened artificially, leaving Jessica unimpressed. “I wanted to create a drink with real sugar, but in moderation,” she explains. This desire to balance great taste with health-conscious choices became the foundation of Neon Tiger. Co-Founders: Pete Sabine, Jessica Berman, and Doug Aitken From Soda to Something More What started as a simple idea quickly evolved into something much bigger. Initially, Jessica envisioned Neon Tiger as a soda alternative for kids and health-conscious adults. But as she explored the potential of her product, she discovered its versatility. "I realised that it’s also a great mixer for delicious cocktails, and a year later, we discovered that Neon Tiger makes a fantastic mixer for coffee as well." - Jessica This flexibility allowed her to broaden her customer base, turning a simple soda into a versatile beverage enjoyed in various forms. A Supportive Community Jessica credits much of her success to the Women of Hong Kong (WOHK) community, which embraced her vision from the very beginning. “WOHK was our first customer,” she says, reflecting on the unwavering support from fellow entrepreneurs like Elisabetta and Sarah, who championed her brand from its early days. The connection began at the women’s lounge shortly after its opening, where Jessica introduced three flavors of her newly crafted beverages. “I’d love for you to try them,” she offered. The flavors were an instant hit, prompting an invitation to display Neon Tiger at the lounge for all members to enjoy. Jessica enthusiastically agreed, and the rest, as they say, is history. Neon Tiger quickly became the go-to beverage for WOHK events, earning countless positive comments for its unique and delightful flavors. Watching women entrepreneurs support one another so wholeheartedly has been both inspiring and heartwarming. As Jessica’s journey continues to unfold, we are proud to have played a small part in her early success and remain honored to support her growth with Neon Tiger. Family at the Heart of the Brand Jessica’s journey with Neon Tiger is deeply rooted in her family. Inspired by her mother’s homemade juices, she now shares that legacy with her own children, creating a brand that reflects her values and passion. Whenever she visits the lounge, Jessica feels the warmth of community, as many women approach her to share their appreciation for the drink—a testament to the meaningful connections she’s built along the way. Her children are also an integral part of the business, turning the journey into a joyful family venture. A particularly memorable moment came when her 7-year-old daughter made the first sale. "We were walking out of our apartment when my 7-year-old daughter told our neighbour about Neon Tiger. My neighbour immediately placed an order” - Jessica Jessica’s eldest daughter, though living overseas, actively supports the brand by reposting Neon Tiger stories on Instagram and engaging with people and businesses during her visits to Hong Kong. Meanwhile, her two younger children are hands-on at events, proudly wearing Neon Tiger merchandise, helping with logistics, and even pitching in to sell cans. It’s a heartwarming story of a family coming together to support an inspiring mother as she follows her dreams and builds a brand that’s as much about love as it is about soda. Breaking Barriers & Turning Heads Despite her many achievements, Jessica continues to face the challenges that come with navigating a male-dominated industry. She admits that it can be frustrating at times, as people often assume her two male business partners are her bosses. Others dismiss her contributions simply because she works from home while staying actively involved in her children’s daily lives. Yet, Jessica remains undeterred. With confidence and determination, she continues to introduce herself as the co-founder of Neon Tiger, proving that success is not defined by traditional stereotypes but by passion, hard work, and resilience. Networking for Success For Jessica, networking has been a game-changer. Though initially intimidating, she now sees it as an essential part of growing Neon Tiger. “As Sarah and Elisabetta always say, it’s important to attend events and engage with people,” she shares. These interactions have helped her build connections and open doors to new opportunities. While it can be daunting to initiate conversations about her brand, she now embraces these interactions as opportunities to promote Neon Tiger and to create valuable relationships with other amazing entrepreneurs at Women of Hong Kong and explore new topics and ideas. Looking Ahead With plans to expand beyond Hong Kong and experiment with new flavors, Jessica is excited about the future. “Let’s see what the future holds!” she says with a smile, her optimism shining through. A Message to Aspiring Entrepreneurs Jessica’s journey serves as an inspiration to many. When asked what advice she would give to those considering starting their own business, especially in the food and beverage sector, her response is simple: "Try it…the biggest regret would be not knowing what would’ve come out of it." - Jessica With her unwavering spirit and commitment to quality, Jessica Berman is not just serving drinks; she’s shaping a community and creating a legacy with Neon Tiger. Cheers to that!
