  • Unlocking SEO: Your Website's Key to Visibility in the Age of AI

There’s a phrase that echoes through the digital marketing world every couple of years: "SEO is dead." But if you were in our vibrant community call this week, you’d know nothing could be further from the truth. This week, we were thrilled to host Velizara Tellalyan (Zara) , a certified SEO consultant and Google Ads expert with over 13 years of experience, for a deep dive into SEO for Beginners . With over 20 members in attendance, the energy was electric, filled with fantastic questions and insightful answers. For those who couldn't make it or for anyone who wants a refresher, here’s a recap of the key takeaways that are already changing how our members think about their online presence. SEO is Very Much Alive (And Evolving) Zara kicked off the call by addressing the elephant in the room: the rise of AI chatbots like ChatGPT. Is SEO still worth the investment? The resounding answer was yes . "SEO is the visibility of your website," Zara explained. "Your organic visibility, which you capitalize on over time without investing every month in advertising, is your SEO." While AI is a powerful new tool, studies show it still only holds a small fraction of the global search market compared to Google's billions of daily searches. The key insight? AI and LLMs (Large Language Models) are trained on website content. This means that having a strong, well-optimized website is now more important than ever to be visible across all platforms, including in AI-generated responses. "SEO will only become irrelevant when we stop using websites," Zara noted. And that future is nowhere in sight. The Three Pillars of a Strong SEO Strategy Many think SEO is just about keywords. Zara clarified that it’s a much more robust field built on three core pillars: Technical SEO: This is the foundation. It’s all about making sure search engine bots can easily crawl and understand your website. This includes site speed, mobile-friendliness, site architecture, and internal linking (like your menus and footers!). On-Page SEO: This is the content you control on your pages. It encompasses your target keywords, high-quality content, meta titles, and descriptions. Off-Page SEO: This is about your website’s reputation across the internet, primarily built through backlinks . When a reputable site links to yours, it’s seen as a "vote of confidence" by Google, significantly boosting your authority. Your First Step: Don't Guess, Do Keyword Research For any business owner feeling overwhelmed, Zara had one clear piece of advice: start with keyword research. This is the absolute first step in any SEO strategy. It’s not about guessing what your customers might search for; it’s about using data to understand what they actually type into Google. Keyword research helps you: Discover the exact phrases your potential clients use. Gauge the monthly search volume for those terms. Understand the competition ("keyword difficulty") so you can target realistic, high-impact keywords first. This research informs everything else—from the pages you create on your site to the content you write and the links you build. The Tools of the Trade You can’t do SEO in the dark. Zara recommended starting with a robust tool suite like SEMrush or Ahrefs , which offer a full range of features from keyword research to site audits. For those targeting the Chinese market, she highlighted Dragon Metrics for Baidu SEO. And for our members, she offered a pro-tip: Leverage the Women of Hong Kong Business Directory! Listing your business creates a valuable "backlink" from our authoritative site to yours, giving your SEO a helpful boost. A Huge Thank You to Zara! We are so grateful to Zara for demystifying SEO and for her generous, expert advice. The conversation was so rich we only scratched the surface! The excitement was palpable, and we’re already planning a follow-up workshop to dive even deeper. Want to connect with Zara? • A Candid Conversation with Coco Chan on Life After Divorce

In our latest, we held space for a conversation often spoken about in whispers, one wrapped in societal shame and personal guilt: navigating life after divorce. Guided by the beautiful resilience and wisdom of Coco Alexandra , an entrepreneur, intuitive healer, and a proud single mama, we ventured into the heart of a topic that touches so many. The virtual room was filled with courage, empathy, and a shared understanding that this is a path no one should walk alone. To protect the space we shared, we are only sharing the key themes and universal questions that arose, while honouring our promise of complete confidentiality for our members and attendees. The Unspoken Questions We Explored The call revealed that whether considering divorce, in the midst of it, or years on the other side, the questions we carry are deeply human and often universal. 1. How can I best support a friend who is considering or going through a divorce? This was a primary concern for many. The answer, offered with great wisdom, was to shift from advisor to listener. The most powerful question you can ask a friend is: “Do you need me to listen right now, or would you like my advice?” This question empowers them to define their needs in the moment. Unsolicited advice, even with the best intentions, can often feel overwhelming. The best support is a non-judgmental ear and a heart that holds space without needing to fix anything. 2. How does someone rebuild trust after infidelity? This painful question was met with raw honesty. The journey to rebuilding trust is deeply personal and must be a conscious choice made by both partners. From the outside, friends and family can only offer a “sacred mirror,” helping their loved one ask the hard questions they might be avoiding. Ultimately, the decision to stay and rebuild or to leave and heal is a path each individual must choose for themselves, often requiring professional guidance to navigate the complex emotions and broken foundations. 3. Is it possible to convince someone that divorce is the right choice? This thought came from a place of deep care, watching a loved one remain in a long-term unhappy situation. The difficult truth is that you cannot convince someone to make a change they are not ready for. Everyone is on their own timeline. The most loving thing you can do is to gently offer your perspective when asked, but to release the need to control the outcome. As one voice on the call shared, “You can tell someone what they should do a million times, but they won’t do it until they see it for themselves.” Powerful Insights from the Other Side Coco generously shared her personal journey—from leaving a 12-year marriage to rebuilding a joyful life with her daughter—offering practical strategies. Your Support System is Your Foundation: The number one tip was to consciously build your inner circle before  you need it. Be specific in asking for help, whether it’s childcare, a home-cooked meal, or simply a safe place to cry. You don’t have to be a “superwoman”; it’s okay to not be okay. Co-Parenting with Grace: It is possible to create a new, healthy dynamic for your children. This involves setting clear boundaries (Coco even created her own “Co-Parenting 10 Commandments”), never speaking negatively about the other parent in front of the children, and reassuring them that while the family structure has changed, they are loved as much as ever. The Gift of Emotional Honesty for Children: Instead of hiding sadness or anger, we can model emotional resilience for our children. It’s okay to cry with them and say, “I’m sad too.” Teaching them tools like yelling into a pillow or shaking out their energy helps them process their big feelings in a healthy way, building their emotional intelligence. Reclaiming Your Identity: Life after divorce is about rediscovery. It’s a chance to reconnect with what you  like, what you  want to do, and who you are outside of a partnership. As Coco radiantly proclaimed, it can be the best decision you ever make, leading to a profound sense of self and authentic happiness that radiates to your children. You Are Not Alone This call was a powerful reminder that behind the statistics and the stigma, there are real stories of pain, resilience, and incredible strength. If you are on this path, know that your feelings are valid, your journey is your own, and there is a community here to support you without judgment. A heartfelt thank you to every woman who shared, listened, and held space. Your courage fuels this community. If you are looking for support on your own journey, you can connect with Coco Alexandra on Instagram  for guidance, healing work, and mentorship. *At Women of Hong Kong, we are committed to creating a safe, confidential, and empowering space for women to connect over life’s most challenging and important topics. • Overthinking, Breakups, and Yelling at Your Kids (Let’s Talk About It)

Our second Women of Hong Kong Community Call was a heartfelt and insightful session, leaving many of us feeling seen, heard, and equipped. With guest expert Dr. Katrina Rozga , we explored topics like managing overthinking, dealing with parenting challenges, and navigating the complexities of relationships. Remind me, What Is a Community Call? If you’re new here, let me explain. A Community Call is a live, interactive session where women can: Learn from Experts:  Each session features a guest speaker or facilitator who shares their insights on a specific topic. Ask Questions & Collaborate:  These calls are designed to be interactive, with opportunities to ask questions, share ideas, and spark conversations. Build Connections:  It’s not just about learning—it’s about meeting like-minded women who understand the power of community. In short, a Community Call is where knowledge, connection and safety meet in a secured virtual room, twice a week for 45 minutes. :) Highlights from the Second Community Call The second Women of Hong Kong Community Call was a masterclass in connection, self-awareness, and practical advice. Expert, Dr Katrina Rozga, answering questions on all-things Psychology! Taming Overthinking with 'Worry Time' One of the most talked-about topics was Dr. Katrina’s technique for managing intrusive thoughts: “Worry Time.” The idea is simple. Choose a set time each day— say 6 PM —to allow yourself to worry or overthink. Throughout the day, when intrusive thoughts arise, write them down and remind yourself, “It’s not worry time yet.” When your designated time arrives, sit down and reflect on those thoughts. Often, you’ll find that some worries no longer feel relevant or urgent, and you’ll approach others with a clearer, calmer mindset. Dr. Katrina also addressed a follow-up question: What if I fall into a loop during worry time?  She explained that by setting boundaries around worrying, you create a mental shift. Instead of feeling consumed by your thoughts, you approach them actively and with a problem-solving attitude. This strategy not only helps you regain control but also reduces the emotional weight of overthinking. Breaking Generational Cycles in Parenting Parenting was another major theme of the session, and Dr. Katrina offered powerful advice on breaking unhealthy generational habits, such as yelling. Her first reminder: No parent is perfect.  Yelling happens, but what matters is what you do afterward. Take the time to repair the relationship by apologizing to your child and explaining your feelings. For example, you might say, “I’m sorry I shouted. I got frustrated when you didn’t listen, but I shouldn’t have raised my voice. I’m working on this, and I hope we can try again.” Dr. Katrina emphasized that this not only helps rebuild trust but also teaches accountability and empathy. If you feel overwhelmed in the moment, step away.  Let your child know that you’re taking a break to calm down—not because of their behavior, but because you want to respond thoughtfully. Introducing this practice to your children also models emotional regulation, giving them tools they can use in their own lives. She shared a simple but impactful mental exercise: Ask yourself, “Are they being bad, or is this just annoying me?”  This perspective shift can help you react with more patience and compassion. Mindfulness Practices for Parents and Kids Mindfulness doesn’t have to be complicated. Dr. Katrina shared sensory-based techniques that make mindfulness fun and accessible for families. One example is mindful eating.  During meals, encourage your family to slow down and savor one bite of food at a time, noticing its taste and texture. Another is mindful observation.  Turn a walk into a game by asking everyone to point out what they see, hear, or feel. This not only grounds you in the present but also helps children develop an appreciation for their surroundings. Finally, there’s the “5 Senses Game” —a quick and effective grounding technique. Ask your child to name five things they can see, four they can touch, three they can hear, two they can smell, and one they can taste. These exercises are simple yet powerful tools to reduce stress and foster presence. Our members attending the second Women of Hong Kong Community Call Addressing Concerning Behaviors in Children Dr. Katrina also tackled questions about modern behavioral challenges in children, including screen addiction, bullying, and harmful language. One participant shared her concern about her child casually using phrases like “go kill yourself” during gaming. Dr. Katrina acknowledged that this language has unfortunately become normalized in some peer groups, but it’s essential to address it. She recommended having an open conversation about the impact of words, even when used jokingly. Explain to your child that while they may not mean harm, others might take their words to heart. Sharing real-life stories about the consequences of harmful language can also help them understand the weight of their words. Navigating the End of Relationships The session also provided support for those facing personal transitions, including the end of long-term relationships. Dr. Katrina reminded participants that breakups aren’t just about losing a partner—they often involve grieving the loss of a confidant, teammate, and shared history. This layered grief can feel overwhelming, but it’s important to allow yourself to feel it fully. For those struggling with unexpected waves of sadness or heaviness, she explained that unresolved emotions often resurface when they’re suppressed. Processing these feelings—whether through journaling, talking to a friend, or even speaking your thoughts out loud—can help you work through them more effectively. She also emphasized the importance of patience. Healing is not linear, and there’s no timeline for moving on. Healing doesn’t follow a timeline, and that’s okay . What struck me most about this session was the vulnerability and honesty in the room. From parenting struggles to personal heartbreaks, women opened up about their experiences, and in return, they received support, validation, and practical advice. As Dr. Katrina said: “When we talk about these things out loud, it reminds us that we’re not alone. Community is so important because we’re all going through the same things.” See you at the next Community Call! • How Jessica Berman Turned a Family Recipe into Hong Kong’s Favorite Soda

In the vibrant city of Hong Kong, where the beverage market is often flooded with sugary drinks and artificial flavors, Jessica Berman saw an opportunity . With no prior experience in the food and beverage industry, Jessica set out to create something different—a soda that was not just refreshing but also healthier, rooted in real ingredients and family values. Enter Neon Tiger : a brand inspired by her mother’s homemade sodas , promising full flavor with none of the artificial gimmicks. You might have already tasted Neon Tiger at one of our various events, where Jessica has become a familiar face. She is always ready to provide a refreshing drink for many to enjoy as we network and gain new experiences within our community. We truly admire her quality and commitment, which have not only made her a staple at our gatherings but also a beloved entrepreneur in Hong Kong. To get to know Jessica a bit more, we ask her a few questions to really understand her perspective and how her journey began! CEO of Neon Tiger Jessica Berman The Spark of Inspiration Jessica’s journey with Neon Tiger was born out of a personal need. As a mother, she struggled to find a drink she felt comfortable giving her kids. Most options were either packed with sugar or sweetened artificially, leaving Jessica unimpressed. “I wanted to create a drink with real sugar, but in moderation,” she explains. This desire to balance great taste with health-conscious choices became the foundation of Neon Tiger. Co-Founders: Pete Sabine, Jessica Berman, and Doug Aitken From Soda to Something More What started as a simple idea quickly evolved into something much bigger. Initially, Jessica envisioned Neon Tiger as a soda alternative for kids and health-conscious adults. But as she explored the potential of her product, she discovered its versatility. "I realised that it’s also a great mixer for delicious cocktails, and a year later, we discovered that Neon Tiger makes a fantastic mixer for coffee as well." - Jessica This flexibility allowed her to broaden her customer base, turning a simple soda into a versatile beverage enjoyed in various forms. A Supportive Community Jessica credits much of her success to the Women of Hong Kong (WOHK) community, which embraced her vision from the very beginning. “WOHK was our first customer,” she says, reflecting on the unwavering support from fellow entrepreneurs like Elisabetta and Sarah, who championed her brand from its early days. The connection began at the women’s lounge shortly after its opening, where Jessica introduced three flavors of her newly crafted beverages. “I’d love for you to try them,” she offered. The flavors were an instant hit, prompting an invitation to display Neon Tiger at the lounge for all members to enjoy. Jessica enthusiastically agreed, and the rest, as they say, is history. Neon Tiger quickly became the go-to beverage for WOHK events, earning countless positive comments for its unique and delightful flavors. Watching women entrepreneurs support one another so wholeheartedly has been both inspiring and heartwarming. As Jessica’s journey continues to unfold, we are proud to have played a small part in her early success and remain honored to support her growth with Neon Tiger. Family at the Heart of the Brand Jessica’s journey with Neon Tiger is deeply rooted in her family. Inspired by her mother’s homemade juices, she now shares that legacy with her own children, creating a brand that reflects her values and passion. Whenever she visits the lounge, Jessica feels the warmth of community, as many women approach her to share their appreciation for the drink—a testament to the meaningful connections she’s built along the way. Her children are also an integral part of the business, turning the journey into a joyful family venture. A particularly memorable moment came when her 7-year-old daughter made the first sale. "We were walking out of our apartment when my 7-year-old daughter told our neighbour about Neon Tiger. My neighbour immediately placed an order” - Jessica Jessica’s eldest daughter, though living overseas, actively supports the brand by reposting Neon Tiger stories on Instagram and engaging with people and businesses during her visits to Hong Kong. Meanwhile, her two younger children are hands-on at events, proudly wearing Neon Tiger merchandise, helping with logistics, and even pitching in to sell cans. It’s a heartwarming story of a family coming together to support an inspiring mother as she follows her dreams and builds a brand that’s as much about love as it is about soda. Breaking Barriers & Turning Heads Despite her many achievements, Jessica continues to face the challenges that come with navigating a male-dominated industry. She admits that it can be frustrating at times, as people often assume her two male business partners are her bosses. Others dismiss her contributions simply because she works from home while staying actively involved in her children’s daily lives. Yet, Jessica remains undeterred. With confidence and determination, she continues to introduce herself as the co-founder of Neon Tiger, proving that success is not defined by traditional stereotypes but by passion, hard work, and resilience. Networking for Success For Jessica, networking has been a game-changer. Though initially intimidating, she now sees it as an essential part of growing Neon Tiger. “As Sarah and Elisabetta always say, it’s important to attend events and engage with people,” she shares. These interactions have helped her build connections and open doors to new opportunities. While it can be daunting to initiate conversations about her brand, she now embraces these interactions as opportunities to promote Neon Tiger and to create valuable relationships with other amazing entrepreneurs at Women of Hong Kong and explore new topics and ideas. Looking Ahead With plans to expand beyond Hong Kong and experiment with new flavors, Jessica is excited about the future. “Let’s see what the future holds!” she says with a smile, her optimism shining through. A Message to Aspiring Entrepreneurs Jessica’s journey serves as an inspiration to many. When asked what advice she would give to those considering starting their own business, especially in the food and beverage sector, her response is simple: "Try it…the biggest regret would be not knowing what would’ve come out of it." - Jessica With her unwavering spirit and commitment to quality, Jessica Berman is not just serving drinks; she’s shaping a community and creating a legacy with Neon Tiger. Cheers to that! • Welcome to The Young Women of Hong Kong's First Gathering!

Hello everyone! I am thrilled to share that we just held our very first Young Women of Hong Kong gathering at the Women’s Lounge! It was a special occasion, particularly as it marked one of the last events in the lounge, creating lasting memories for our new founding members. We are grateful they could experience the powerful atmosphere there. Arriving & Getting Settled The lounge transformed into a cozy and inviting space, encouraging everyone to open up and feel at ease. As the room filled with attendees, we enjoyed food and drinks while getting to know one another. The warmth and friendliness created an environment where everyone felt welcome and unafraid to speak up. It was inspiring to see young women from diverse ethnic backgrounds and professions , showcasing how empowering women can be across various fields. As we settled in, Sarah kicked off our gathering with a wonderful introduction, which she later passed on to me. I was excited to welcome everyone to our first Young WoHK gathering and express our appreciation for their presence. We started with icebreakers, where each participant shared their name, ethnicity, how they learned about Women of Hong Kong, and their favorite food. It was heartening to hear the diverse ways people found out about us , highlighting that no matter where you come from, there is always a place for you here. Community Hearing how we all came together was the perfect transition to the next segment, where I asked everyone around the table what community meant . This segment aimed to help us understand our goals as members of the Young Women of Hong Kong group. Everyone shared their unique meanings and perspectives, and I enjoyed hearing the variety of thoughts. What stood out to me was a consensus that community encompassed not only “support” but also “connection,” “belonging,” and “collaboration.” Many expressed that community means having a safe space to share experiences, while others highlighted the importance of mentorship and encouragement. Diving Deep Next, we played a game where each participant received a piece of paper to write down a question, whether seeking advice on a challenge or asking something fun they wanted to know from others . The goal was to create a space for the young women to open up and engage in meaningful conversations about topics of interest. To ensure everyone felt comfortable, the game was kept anonymous . We had so many conversations about various topics, ranging from workplace conflicts, relationships, and even misunderstandings with parents. I particularly enjoyed this game because it brought us closer together. The questions fostered relatable discussions, allowing us to share interesting stories that resonated with everyone. Talking, chatting, and getting to know each other was a delightful experience. This group of women is bright and kind, truly reflecting the wonderful community we've built. It’s inspiring to see how like-minded we are in supporting one another and forming new friendships. Despite the various reasons for being there—whether for work, a partner, school, or summer break— we all share a common goal . How wonderful it is to connect in this way! Thank you Thank you so much to our founding members of our Young Women of Hong Kong community. We are delighted to have you here with us, and we are so excited for all the new fun events and gatherings to come! If you are interested in joining our Young Women of Hong Kong community, make sure to visit the Women of Hong Kong website; Women of Hong Kong and become a member! Can’t wait to have you join us!

  • A Kokedama Workshop Experience with Botani Bloom

Hello everyone, my name is Kyla, and I’m a university student from Germany spending this summer working in Community Engagement as an Intern at Women of Hong Kong (WOHK)! I'm only a few days in and I'm so excited to be part of this wonderful community full of inspiring women. I recently had the privilege of attending a mini Kokedama crafting workshop, hosted by two of our lovely members at WOHK, Sophie and Charlene Marié. I can’t wait to share my experience with you! This week, I had the amazing opportunity to attend a Mini Kokedama Workshop , hosted by two of our lovely WOHK members, Sophie and Charlene Marié. These talented sisters are the founders of Botani Bloom , a botanical studio, and My Rooftop is Green , a landscape design company. Their French-Chinese heritage allows them to bring a unique blend of cultures into their work, creating plant products and designs that feel both elegant and meaningful. Kokedama This is my plant! Kokedama, meaning “moss ball” in Japanese, is a beautiful and meditative form of plant art where a plant’s roots are wrapped in soil and moss instead of being placed in a traditional pot. Crafting kokedama is not only a creative and calming hands-on activity, but it also encourages mindfulness, patience, and a deeper connection to nature. The process of shaping the moss and soil into a living sculpture can feel grounding and therapeutic,  a gentle reminder of the beauty in simplicity and care. The Workshop Experience The moment I entered their beautiful venue, we were immediately greeted by a vibrant display of healthy, thriving plants that breathed life into the entire space. It truly felt like a fresh breath of air. What stood out to me most was the soothing scent of natural aromas that didn’t just come from the plants, but also from their collaboration with the French brand Collines de Provence . Their natural scented candles, room sprays, and diffusers, crafted with fine fragrances from master perfumers in Grasse, added an elegant, aromatic touch to the atmosphere. Before the workshop began, we mingled over sweet refreshments, chatting casually and getting to know other participants. It felt less like a formal event and more like a cozy gathering of friends. Sophie and Charlene were the perfect hosts—warm, welcoming, and full of energy. They gave us a tour of the beautifully arranged setup, which immediately got everyone excited to start crafting. Getting our hands dirty Once everyone was settled, we moved into the workshop area, and the sisters began by introducing the art of kokedama, sharing its cultural origins, and giving us a step-by-step demonstration of the crafting process. They even shared tips on how to care for our moss-wrapped, by then we were all buzzing with excitement to roll up our sleeves and get our hands dirty in the soil (gloves, however, were thoughtfully provided for those who preferred to stay clean ;)). The process of shaping the soil, wrapping it in moss, and tying it all together felt incredibly therapeutic. It was such a joy to see everyone’s unique creations come to life, each one reflecting a little bit of its maker’s personality. A Fun and Thoughtful Finish To wrap up the session, Sophie and Charlene surprised us with a fun quiz about the history and cultural significance of kokedama. The winner walked away with a special prize, a bottle of their wonderfully scented room fragrances from their collection! It was a lighthearted way to end the event and left everyone smiling. Why you should try a Kokedama Workshop This workshop wasn’t just about crafting, it was about slowing down and connecting with others. In our fast-paced world, it can be so difficult to just take a moment and appreciate the quiet joy of creating something with your own hands. I left with more than a moss-wrapped plant; I left with new connections, refreshing conversations, and a big smile on my face. If you’re looking for an activity that combines mindfulness, creativity, and a little bit of plant magic, I highly recommend attending one of Botani Bloom’s workshops About Botani Bloom Every piece tells a story. From the careful selection of each plant to the final touch of vintage-inspired packaging, every detail is chosen with intention. Sophie and Charlene truly have a talent for blending elegance and nature. Their curated botanicals are paired with timeless pots and hand-designed labels that echo the romance of old-world French gardens. Each product is more than a gift, it’s a celebration of nature, design, and the quiet joy of nurturing something beautiful. Community and craft I had such a wonderful time and experience, I would definitely join another one soon! Thank you to Sophie and Charlene for hosting this wonderful workshop and to Women of Hong Kong for creating such a unique opportunity. I left the event feeling inspired, grounded, and excited to nurture my little moss ball at home. As the saying goes, “There is beauty in simplicity, and power in creating with your hands.” I couldn’t agree more. • Triathlons to making waves!

For Alex Sheldon, the waves she has conquered are not limited to the open ocean. As an integral part of Women of Hong Kong , Alex has played an impactful role in supporting the growth of our community and The Women’s Lounge. Although she has remained modest about her achievements, we believe it is only right to share her story. Her journey of resilience, reinvention, and relentless curiosity has inspired countless women to take bold steps toward their own horizons. A seasoned endurance athlete, Alex has pushed her limits in triathlons, Ironman competitions, and ultra-marathons. After a hip replacement forced her to step back from high-impact sports, she discovered a new passion in ocean rowing. The sport offered her a way to continue challenging herself while being gentler on her body. “ I had to stop running after my hip replacement, ” Alex explains, “but I needed to get back to the endurance side of things Ie., I’m slow!. Rowing was the perfect fit. It is physically demanding, but not load-bearing, and it gave me a way to continue doing what I love.” Since then, Alex has rowed through awe-inspiring moments, overcome extreme conditions, and discovered profound lessons. Her story shows the strength it takes to embrace life’s changes and to chart new courses, even when the destination is uncertain. The Calm and Freedom of Rowing For Alex, rowing is more than just a physical challenge.  “I do not really think about the strength it takes to row,” she says. “It is the freedom, the open water, the open skies, and the sound of the blades in the water. It is incredibly peaceful.” One unforgettable moment came during a nighttime row from Bangor, Ireland, to just north of Oban, Scotland. “It was during the 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. shift,” Alex recalls. “The skies were pitch black, the stars were incredibly bright, and there were shooting stars. Everything feels magnified at night. It was magical .” The Reality of Life at Sea While moments like these highlight the beauty of ocean rowing, the reality of life on the water is far from glamorous. “Your bathroom is a bucket on the open deck,” Alex says with a laugh. “It is definitely not luxurious, but you adapt.” Mental endurance is just as important as physical preparation. On her endurance rows, Alex works with a crew of twelve, with six people rowing at a time in three-hour shifts. “Sometimes you chat, sometimes there is music that fits the crew’s mood, and other times it is just the sound of the sea and your own thoughts,” she explains. “Our minds are incredibly powerful, and that is what gets you through the toughest stretches.” Surviving the Turks and Caicos Storm One of Alex’s most challenging experiences came during her attempt to row from the Turks and Caicos to Miami. On only the second day of a 600 nautical mile expedition We completed about 170, conditions became dangerous. “The wind built up to between twenty and forty-five knots, and the waves went as high as eight meters,” Alex recalls. “We took on over a tonne of water and could not keep on course. The wind and waves were so strong that we ended up drifting toward Cuba and Haiti. Not ideal for the Americans on board.” Eventually, the crew had to call for rescue. “It was not a case of thinking we would not make it,” Alex says. “I understood the boat and had complete trust in the captain and co-skipper. But when the first call for rescue goes out at 4:30 p.m., and the first response does not come until 11:30 p.m., time feels very slow and it is dark.” The team was ultimately rescued and taken to Inagua, a small island in the Bahamas. Although the row did not end as planned, Alex reflects on the experience as a reminder of the ocean’s unpredictability and the importance of preparation. Memories Made Through Rowing Through her rowing expeditions, Alex has created lifelong memories and meaningful connections. Two journeys stand out as particularly significant. “Rowing from Bangor to Oban and Oslo to Gothenburg was special because I did it with my lovely friend Jane,” Alex says. “She is a brilliant teammate and a fellow member of the rowing club in the UK. It was such a good time rowing together even though she has a penchant for bringing her tinned Sardines.” Another milestone came when Alex persuaded her husband to join her for his first rowing experience. “ He had never rowed before ,” she says with a laugh. “ Talk about a baptism of fire. ” Lessons from the Ocean Ocean rowing has taught Alex patience, resilience, and the importance of being present in the moment. “You have got to be fit, not necessarily a great rower, but fit,” she says. “Do not think about how long it is going to take you. Enjoy the moment, which is a lot harder than we think.” Her earlier experiences with triathlons and running also expanded her perspective on what is possible. “I bought my first pair of running shoes at thirty-two,” Alex explains. “Things like this were not even on my radar back then. But endurance comes with age, so if I could give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be to start younger.” A Role Model for Her Children For Alex, one of the most rewarding aspects of her journey is the inspiration it provides to others, especially her children. “One of my inspirations for doing all this is that it inspires my children, in whatever way, to show that if we put our minds to something, we can achieve it,” she says. “Hard work will always pay off.” Her message to other women is one of hope and empowerment. “Anyone can do it if they have the support of their family and friends,” Alex says. “It is never too late. We often think it is too hard when you have a family and responsibilities, but there is almost always a way.” What’s Next, Alex? Alex responds with a laugh, “Have I not done enough?” But her plans say otherwise. Alex is determined to finish the Turks and Caicos route without needing rescue, and is hoping to join the HKYC row La Traversee de Paris in September. Alex is also excited about exploring hiking trails across the globe. Her journey is far from over, and her story continues to inspire others to dream big and embrace the unknown. “With support, determination, and hard work, you can achieve more than you ever thought possible.” To learn more about Alex’s work and her upcoming expeditions, visit her website at https://thehomestylist.org . Whether you’re looking for design inspiration or motivation to embrace your next challenge, Alex’s journey is a reminder that it’s never too late to explore new horizons!

  • Sweat Equity: In Conversation with Sarah Wersborg

When it comes to redefining the fitness landscape, Sarah Wersborg is leading the charge. Founder of Project S , a boutique fitness studio that is as much about community as it is about physical strength, Sarah has created a space where confidence flourishes, barriers are broken, and lives are transformed. In this exclusive interview, Sarah shares her journey, her philosophy, and her mission to empower women through fitness. Q: What inspired you to start your fitness journey and eventually open your own studio? Honestly, fitness changed my life. I started working out as a personal way to find strength and balance, and over time, it became something much bigger. I realized that fitness wasn’t just about the physical—it was about empowerment, confidence, and community. I wanted to create a space where people, especially women, could feel that same transformative energy. That’s how Project S was born. Q: What’s the philosophy behind Project S? It’s simple: life begins outside your comfort zone. Our studio isn’t about perfection or quick fixes—it’s about showing up for yourself, taking small steps, and building strength from the inside out. We focus on inclusivity and creating an environment where everyone feels welcome, regardless of their fitness level or experience. Q: Were there any defining moments that solidified your path? There were so many! But one that stands out was hearing from a client who told me, “This gym made me feel like I belong somewhere for the first time.” That was everything to me. It reminded me why I started this journey—to create a space where people feel seen, supported, and celebrated. Q: Community is clearly a big part of your studio. How do you foster that sense of belonging? Sarah: It’s at the heart of everything we do. We’re not just a studio—we’re a community. We encourage collaboration and connection, whether that’s through group classes, social events, or just cheering each other on during a workout. I always tell my clients, “Friends who train together, grow together.” It’s amazing what we can achieve when we lift each other up. Q: What are some fitness myths you wish you could debunk? Sarah:  Oh, where do I start? The biggest one is that fitness is all about aesthetics. Spoiler: it’s not! It’s about longevity, mental clarity, and overall wellness. Another one? That you need to be “fit” to start working out. Everyone starts somewhere, and it’s the journey that matters most. Q: What advice would you give to someone who’s hesitant to start their fitness journey? Start small and stay consistent. You don’t need to do everything at once—you just need to take one step at a time. And remember, it’s not about being perfect. Just show up, give 100 percent of what you’ve got that day, and trust the process. Q: What do you love most about what you do? It’s the people. Seeing clients leave the studio with sweaty smiles, feeling stronger and more confident than when they walked in—that’s the best part. Watching them grow, not just physically but mentally, and knowing I played a small role in that transformation is incredibly rewarding. Q: What’s next for you and Project S? I want to continue building our community and expanding the ways we empower women. I’m exploring wellness initiatives that go beyond fitness—like mindfulness workshops and recovery programs—to help our clients live vibrant, balanced lives. My ultimate goal? To inspire as many people as possible to step outside their comfort zones and discover their strength. Q: Any final words of wisdom for our readers? Sarah:  Fitness is so much more than just exercise—it’s a way to build resilience, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Don’t be afraid to start. Life begins outside your comfort zone, and the magic happens when you take that first step. Sarah Wersborg isn’t just a fitness entrepreneur—she’s a trailblazer, a community builder, and a source of inspiration for everyone who crosses her path. At Project S, she’s proving that strength isn’t just about muscles—it’s about the courage to show up, stand tall, and face life head-on. Are you ready to take the first step outside your comfort zone? Visit Project S today to explore classes, meet Sarah, and start your journey toward a stronger, more confident you!

  • The Quiet Revolution: Sonia Samtani’s Impact on Mental Health in Hong Kong

When Sonia Samtani first stepped into the world of mental health two decades ago, therapy wasn’t a topic people in Hong Kong discussed openly. Hypnotherapy, in particular, was often misunderstood—shrouded in myths and skepticism. But Sonia saw a gap, a need, and an opportunity to make a difference. “I remember being the youngest person in the room at industry events,” Sonia reflects. “Mental health wasn’t a mainstream conversation back then, and I often felt like the lone voice advocating for it." Starting her career during a time when therapy was rarely spoken about, Sonia faced her fair share of challenges. Skepticism, curiosity, and even hesitation were common reactions to her work. But rather than being discouraged, she understood that these reactions came from a lack of exposure. “I knew it wasn’t personal,” she says. “It was simply unfamiliar territory for many people. My goal was to educate and show how powerful the mind can be in transforming every aspect of life—from health to relationships to performance.” Her early days were humble and full of determination. Sonia’s first office was a small room inside her father’s workspace, where she conducted private sessions with clients who approached hypnotherapy with cautious hope. Each breakthrough she witnessed reaffirmed her purpose. “Seeing clients move from fear to confidence, or overcome deeply ingrained limiting beliefs, was the most rewarding part of my work,” she shares. There were moments that felt like milestones—like the time she worked with Formula Renault Race Car Driver Dan Wells. “Helping Dan with his mental focus during races was a game-changer,” Sonia recalls. (Pictured: Formula Renault Race Car Driver Dan Wells , credit: PRESTIGE Online ) “He won every single race during our time together, and the recognition we received from that was a turning point. It helped people see hypnotherapy as a credible tool for performance enhancement.” As her practice grew, so did her passion for spreading awareness. Sonia began organizing workshops, hosting seminars, and eventually training others to become hypnotherapists. Over the years, she’s seen a dramatic shift in how mental health is perceived in Hong Kong. “It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come. Therapy is no longer seen as something you turn to only when you’re ‘broken.’ People are starting to view it as an ongoing practice, like going to the gym—but for your mind.” Even with this progress, Sonia believes there’s still work to be done. “I’d love for mental health care to be as normalized as visiting a doctor for physical pain,” she explains. “It’s about building emotional resilience, expanding awareness, and consistently nurturing your mental well-being.” Looking back on her journey, Sonia feels immense pride—not just for her own growth, but for the thriving mental health community in Hong Kong. She remains committed to organizing events, raising awareness, and training the next generation of therapists. “It’s been a privilege to be part of this evolution,” Sonia says. “The shifts I’ve seen are proof that when we work together, we can create a community where people are happier, healthier, and more conscious in their daily lives.” Sonia’s story is a reminder of the power of persistence, education, and compassion. Through her work, she’s not only transformed individual lives but has also helped shape a cultural shift—bringing mental health into the heart of Hong Kong’s well-being conversation. Ready to Begin Your Own Mental Wellness Journey? Whether you’re looking to overcome limiting beliefs, build emotional resilience, or simply take the first step toward a healthier mind, Sonia Samtani’s team is here to guide you. Explore her workshops, hypnotherapy sessions, and training programs to unlock your full potential. Visit soniasamtani.com and allaboutyoucentre.com today to learn more and book your session.
